Campus Writing Program (CWP)
“Communication skills are extremely important. Unfortunately, both written and oral skills are often ignored in engineering schools, so today we have many engineers with excellent ideas and a strong case to make, but they don’t know how to make that case. If you can’t make the case, no matter how good the science and technology may be, you’re not going to see your ideas reach fruition.” George Heilmeier
The Colorado School of Mines Writing Program is founded on the idea that the ability to communicate effectively will make Mines graduates more competitive, more confident, more successful in their careers, and ultimately in a better position to influence their chosen fields, the workplace, and our world.
The Campus Writing Program (CWP) is instrumental in addressing some of the key goals of this institution, including those stated in the "CSM Graduate Profile":
- Graduates must have the skills to communicate information, concepts and ideas effectively.
- Graduates must have the knowledge and skills to be able to recognize, define and solve problems by applying sound scientific and engineering principles.
- Graduates should possess the skills and attitudes which promote teamwork and cooperation and continue their own growth through life-long learning.
To avoid the tragedy of missed opportunities so well stated by George Heilmeier, corporate executive at Bellcore, the CWP is designed to help students improve their ability to meet the expectations for written communication in their careers both at CSM and beyond. The communication skills students learn should foster the kind of critical thinking and desire for learning that will enable them to become more effective communicators and life-long learners.
The CWP is founded on the idea that when students have both a solid technical and scientific background and the ability to convey their ideas, they are ultimately in a better position to influence their career paths, their chosen fields, and their world with the full fruit of their talents.
