| Humanities: Undergraduate Minor
Humanistic studies explore the memorial record of the human imagination and intellect, discovering, recreating, and critically examining the essential core of experience that sustains the human spirit. The Humanities minor is a way for students to explore a particular thematic focus within one or several humanistic disciplines, including literature, creative writing, history, philosophy and ethics, art, and music.
One way to select a thematic focus is to choose courses from a single humanistic discipline. For example, a student might focus on literature, building a minor from 18 hours of literature courses. Students may instead choose to investigate a theme from several different disciplinary perspectives. For example, a thematic focus on humanistic studies of science and technology could include history, literature, and philosophy courses.
Requirements for the Humanities Minor/ASI
- The minor requires 18 credits of thematically coherent courses, and the ASI requires 12 credits of thematically coherent courses. Students must work with the Humanities advisor to select an appropriate set of classes.
- For a minor, no more than six credits total may come from 100 or 200 level courses, and for the ASI, no more than three credits may be earned in 100 or 200 level courses. Please also note that only two language courses can be counted towards the humanities minor, and only one toward the ASI. Like all other courses, a language course must be appropriate for the chosen theme.
- No more than one half of the required credit hours may be filled by transferred courses. Further, all transfer courses to be included in the minor must be approved by the minor advisor.
- Courses in music performance and studio art may not be included in the minor.
