International Political Economy of Latin America LAIS 335 |
|
This course examines the relationship between the international context, domestic social and economic conditions, and government policy in Latin America throughout the 20th century. The first part of the class takes a chronological approach, beginning with the post-colonial primary export economy that was typical of Latin America at the end of the 19th century. The class then focuses on the period of state-led industrialization that followed the Great Depression and ended with the debt crisis of the 1980s. Finally, the class looks at the liberal reforms implemented in the past 25 years. The second part of the class is dedicated to specific countries: Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Venezuela. Each exhibits a different type of economy—with varying levels of openness, industrialization, and dependence on natural resources. Combined, they provide a sense of the range of experiences with development and reform in the region.
